Pearls are a natural organic material and they originate from a marine environment. Because of this, they enjoy humidity in their environment, and wherever possible should be kept in an area which has some humidity. When not on show, we at Atelier keep our pearls in a box, wrapped in tissue, with a small jar of water to increase humidity. Pearls also enjoy being worn as they absorb oils from your skin, which keeps their lustre fresh and bright.
Other General care tips for pearls:
• Always wipe your pearls with a lint free cloth after wear to remove any dirt
• Never spray perfume, hairspray, or use cosmetics near pearls as this can be very damaging to them
• If you wear your pearls a lot, try and have them restrung every two years or so as perspiration and oil can rot the silk on which pearls are strung causing it to break
• If your pearls get dirty, then gently wash them in a warm water, and lay them on a soft towel to dry thoroughly
• Remember, pearls are very soft and can easily be scratched, cracked or damaged, so never wear them to do heavy work (like the gardening!)
