About the item Danish jeweller Ghita Ring chooses only the best and most unusual stones for her fabulous jewellery, and this cabochon cut 21 carat moonstone is no exception. 18mm x 11mm in dimension, its large size and clear blue-y grey colour make it a stunning stone, but it also exhibits a feature known as chatoyancy, or cats eye. In gemology (the study of gemstones) chatoyancy is an optical reflection seen in certain gemstones. Coined from the French chat oeil, meaning cat's eye, chatoyancy arises either from the fibrous structure of a gemstone or from fibrous inclusions or cavities within the stone. The effect can be likened to the sheen off a spool of silk; the mobile reflection always being perpendicular to the direction of the fibres. Good cats eye stones are collectors items, and with its heavy silver bezel setting, contrasting against the chunky oxidized silver foxtail chain, this is a stunning piece which is sure to get lots of admiring glances.
The entire pendant measures 3cm long from the top of the bail, and measures 1.4cm wide. The chain measures 41cm (16 inches) long.
About Ghita Ring Working out of Denmark, Ghita Ring produces work that personifies the best of Danish style in jewellery. Many of her signature pieces use gorgeous natural pearls, and often she oxidises the silver in her pieces to give a smokey grey contrast to the metal which wears with time to give a beautiful antiqued look. Oxidisation is an age old technique which uses a surface coating on the silver, leaving it with a lustrous deep shiny dark coating.
